scott pilgrim vs the world brief thoughts

what’s with all this comic shit lately! time to vary up the content with… another comic book movie. with various video game elements, comic book feel, with everything from pop culture, music, and even vegan diets clashed together, kind of like marvel vs capcom or something. be prepared to watch all the random shit you watch on youtube and compile it into an epic 2 hours poking fun, or perhaps an homage, to everything from bollywood, record deals, emo’s, immature love, and just a glimpse at our world if we could actually do the things we imagined.

scott pilgrim is a 22 year old bassist living a normal life who is dating a chinese school girl, normal so far no? he eventually starts chasing after ramona flowers, who is way too cool for him. ultimately, if they are going to date, scott must defeat her seven evil exes to stay with her. pretty simple video game plot, go through the bosses and defeat them. the characters are all individually rich and colorful while the pace of the movie stays focused.

in a movie where you have people conjuring demons and movie stars and pro skateboarders and whatever the hell else that might happen; it’s hard to introduce characters and quickly kill them off, and still make you feel anything about the character themselves. edgar wright does a great job introducing the characters in the short time they have dueling scott and as they progress, they grow more mature and stronger like the relationship between scott and ramona.

the editing used in shaun of the dead and hot fuzz is back better than ever in the first 20 minutes while scott’s mind is dazed over ramona and fits the comic mood perfectly. the treatment of type along the movie is well done and just like a video game, everything seems to level up. characters, scott’s band, relationships, and even the ex battles. each fight is better than the last and has to be fought differently learning new things or perhaps even wanting to give up. i love the fact that having these skills to suddenly take massive amounts of damage and land 64 hit combos in the air… is normal. it’s like people in canada are born with these powers and they just know how to do all this crazy shit, but you don’t really recognize that power until an evil ex tries to fight you. i’d say it would reach out far beyond the comic book and video game crowd, although it might be appreciated more. if your looking for a fun metaphorical love story, this is how it’s done.

obviously this isn’t your normal action comedy love story thingy…

tournament stick mods

image

a few hours ago i knew jack shit about modding arcade sticks, but check this shit out. super street fighter tournament edition arcade stick and switched out the buttons, joystick and springs. have you ever seen an accent color so striking? fuck no it doesn’t look gay, how dare you. anyways, this isn’t a very hard task at all but the problem is when you make a bunch of tiny forgetful mistakes and have to constantly take apart and put this thing back together. watching your brothers “o shit” face while screwing the joystick together and hearing a large snap is priceless as well. i have yet to see if i like all of the mods, or if it even works… but we’ll have to see. practice makes perfect so another day and another thing learned. next thing on the agenda is designing a new faceplate when i have time. my brother made a good point, that blue does look pretty similar to the urban.construkt c blue…

poster colour restock!

killzone2

picked up killzone 2 friday and it is by far one of the best first person shooters i’ve ever played. graphics are crisp and the best i’ve seen, the environment and ambiance is well created, and the levels are designed for intense firefights. definitely a must play for any fps fan, the only issue that i would have would be the control sensitivity which feels slightly off. the online mode is equally as rewarding, especially with surround sound.

hattoilett

so i was brushing my teeth the other morning and totally dropped my hat into the toilet. you can bet you’ll see me wearing this hat again… after i wash it a few times. i can’t afford a new cap at the moment. =(

bro_lasagna

pizza hut pasta is the shit, doesn’t it look delectable.

biggestblunt

just going through some old photos and came across the biggest blunt in the world. I DO NOT SMOKE, LET ALONE SMOKE UP, but i just couldn’t resist taking this picture.

indigo7000

so here is a $750,000 digital press at work, which constantly breaks down everyday. damn right i’ll be printing some of my work on this!

postercolour

finally got in my new poster colours from korea; the medium i use for most of my colorful abstract pieces. i’ve been needing a new set for over a year now. it has similar qualities to that of tempera paint. two of my older sets unfortunately dried up =/. i will be creating a few new pieces within the next month or so before may’s exhibit. picked up the rest of my paintings from the ashland bar in chicago over the weekend. slowly, but surely getting ready for the next display. I am currently debating on displaying my work at Black Box Diamond Gallery in Hoffman Estates later in the year, but am going through a depressive stage i suppose. Hopefully the next update will have some progress work!

here are a few random youtube videos for your boredom.

street fighter 4

sf4
so i picked up the new street fighter 4 last week and i have to admit that it has grown on me over the past week. i never hated the game, but obviously i really enjoyed it because i spent hours playing it every night with my brother… the online matchmaking is set up really well on the ps3 version, and i would imagine on the 360 as well. the mix of 3d and 2d game play is a fresh change from old school 2d games, especially with modern hd graphics. enough of that though, i’m not here to review video games. i recently popped in a few of my older street fighter and snk games and i suddenly feel as if they are out of date. it was only a month or two ago where my brother and i were playing and i thought the sprites were keeping up with the times, especial guilty gear! it is a solid fighter and i have transitioned from using sakura to chun li (because akuma is a pain in the ass to unlock with lack of time on your hands). i’ve always avoided her because of the fact that she is rather difficult to use, or so i’ve heard… but i honestly like her style. sf4 should definitely hold me off until tekken 6.
chunli
heres a picture of chun li, sexy thighs no? i swear her nipples are ultra detailed in the game… which by the way the legend of chun li comes out in theaters this friday.
driveway
whenever it snows lately my driveway never seems to pack up snow on the top portion… not that i’m complaining at all, i wouldn’t mind not shoveling for the rest of my life, but definitely very odd.
skid_postit
i thought this was the cutest post it note carrier in the world, damn right i said it, its cute! i wish i had a remote control fork lift so i can drive around the skid on my desk all day at work. wouldn’t you!?
server
so our server room at my work isn’t that large, but… well the image speaks for itself. i calmly asked the technician what he would do if i started pulling all the wires out, he calmly replied, “don’t.” it is one of those phrases with such power behind the tone that makes you shiver, like akuma is warning you not to fuck with it otherwise he’ll unleash the raging demon (yes i’m in a street fighter phase, call me a nerd). lol i assume it would be easier to rewire the entire building rather than figure out where every wire came from. lucky for him, the company is moving buildings at the end of the year so he will have to sooner or later.

well that’s it for today’s rambling, i am trying to get in a habit of blogging and keeping up with other things in life. i suppose i feel it’s good discipline and will help me ready up for my next exhibit. the poster colors from korea have arrived so it is only a matter of time before i start pumping out some new paintings. sadly, my old set has hardened and is no more =( will post some new updates soon and perhaps some tutorials. hopefully the last one was useful to someone, and if you’d like to see a specific tutorial just let me know. piece!
