macbook pro – joining the dark side

i am a big fan of windows 7 and have used microsoft ever since i’ve learned how to type but i have had the opportunity to work with a macbook pro the last few days. to start off, working with a mac everyday in school and a professional environment is completely different from carrying around one of these laser cut pieces of metal.

apple excels with its simplistic design and sleek… everything. personally, i am not missing any features although i do use up the 2 usb ports fairly quickly while i am working. no obnoxious buttons everywhere nor are there a hundred ridiculous ports and shapes on the damn thing. i was always a vaio fan when it came to laptops but the macbook won me over pretty quickly in design now that it’s been in my bag. the only downfall to me personally was no blu-ray, which sony gives you for 50 dollars if you buy one of their vaio’s. the little things like the laser cut illuminated keyboard, crisp screen… okay this is just my experience not trying to sell jack shit here. one thing though is that the edge of the keyboard is sharp and sometimes bothers my wrists but no biggie.

from a home use standpoint, programs run extremely well, especially while multi-tasking. obviously anybody that knows even a little bit of mac knows the major differences but i personally find it running much better than the g5 at work with its new intel processor.

i actually have no idea why im writing any of this anymore but the major difference for me while working was the 1 less click i have to do in every aspect. there is nearly a hotkey for almost command, there are extensive ways to organize your desktop compared to the “show desktop” button, and switching between programs are a breeze.

a further look into the os and you’ll find that nearly everything can be synced easily without hassle and it’s all part of the os. i have personally decided to use some software myself but from the looks of it, the pre-installed mac software does just fine. ical seems to sync to google calendar instantly while other programs such as email and contacts work fairly well importing the call id pictures from my android phone through google to the address book. i am getting used to the whole dragging a program into the apps folder to install thing, just makes it that much easier to keep things organized and clean.

i have never had a battery last more than 2 hours and this monster goes on for probably more than 4 hours before i have to worry about anything. i still haven’t explored everything it has to offer but from first glance i have definitely become more efficient, at least around the desktop. browsing the web has become even easier on the laptop with the whole finger swipe crap that everybody was going crazy over when the iphone first came out, but honestly i found myself naturally swiping through pages going back and forth, up and down on the websites. the new mouse even has the same swipe functions as the whole entire thing is touch. apple finally opened up their eyes and allows you to right click on the touchpad as well as the mouse they provide.

not saying apple will replace windows in my heart, but as far as laptops go, i have never used anything better yet. and i haven’t tried it yet, but technically i could go and install windows 7 and it’s supposed to run just like a regular pc, or so i’ve heard. a few future issues come into mind such as repairs and services, or even the price for a new macbook pro edition, but you can’t go wrong with a company laptop. i must admit i was one of those people who disliked mac just because of the whole image, i mean 4 iphones and the same damn design? but it works, it fucking works and it has gotten much better since the last time i have worked on a mac. the annoying mouse acceleration is nearly gone, a right click, and you can even kill somebody with this thing.

i couldn’t resist and tried throwing starcraft 2 at this thing and it runs beautifully, besides the lockups with the new patch that blizzard is having issues with.

now i wish i could say this will mean i will be more productive, but probably not. heres a logo peek for a current client based in chicago.
